For those in health and social care, one development deserves your particular attention.
Forecast: CQC inspection activity is accelerating, fast. Under its improvement plan, the CQC has committed to publishing 9,000 assessments by the end of September 2026 and it is on track. By late 2025 it had already published over 4,300 assessments, running roughly 50% ahead of the previous year.
The practical takeaway: The post-COVID lull is over. CQC is actively tackling aged ratings and increasing assessment activity, so providers with older ratings should be prepared for inspection sooner rather than later.
A word of caution: don’t wait for the new sector-specific frameworks before preparing, with rollout towards the end 2026. Until then, assessments are continuing under the current Single Assessment Framework. Preparation now is not wasted effort; good evidence of safe, effective, well-led care will matter under any framework.
